Magnesium bisglycinate, explained

Magnesium bisglycinate is magnesium bound to glycine, the gentle, well-absorbed form. This page covers what it is, how to read the dose, how to take it, and exactly what we're allowed to say about it.

What is magnesium bisglycinate?

Magnesium on its own isn't stable, so supplements bind it to something else: oxide, citrate, glycinate (bisglycinate) and so on. Bisglycinate pairs each magnesium atom with two molecules of the amino acid glycine. It's the form people usually pick when they want something gentle on the stomach.

The number that matters: elemental magnesium

A label can say "1,500 mg magnesium bisglycinate" and mean far less actual magnesium, because most of that weight is the glycine. The figure to look for is elemental magnesium. Anima prints it: 300 mg of elemental magnesium per two capsules, 80% of the nutrient reference value (NRV), plus 5 mg of vitamin B6 (357% NRV).

What it does: the claims we're allowed to make

  • Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue
  • Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function
  • Magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system
  • Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function
  • Magnesium contributes to electrolyte balance

  • Vitamin B6 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
  • Vitamin B6 contributes to normal psychological function

Does magnesium help you sleep?

Lots of brands sell magnesium for sleep, but there is no authorised sleep, calm or relaxation claim for magnesium in Great Britain, so we don't make one. Melatonin isn't permitted in UK food supplements either, and there's none in ours.

How to take it

  • Two capsules a day with water, with or without food.
  • One bottle is 60 capsules, which is 30 days.
  • Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

Check with your GP or pharmacist first if…

you're pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
